Defeat Is Not the End! Aishat Gbadamosi Sets Sights on a Stronger Boxing Comeback

Nigerian boxer Aishat Gbadamosi has refused to allow her quarter-final exit at the 2026 African Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, to discourage her ambitions, describing the experience as an opportunity to return stronger.

The young boxer, who represented Nigeria at the continental competition, said her defeat had given her a reason to work harder and improve her performance ahead of future challenges.

Speaking on Inside Naija on Sport247 after returning from Nairobi, Gbadamosi acknowledged that losing was part of an athlete’s journey and should not be treated as the end of their progress.

“It’s not every time I will be winning. There’s a time you might lose. You can lose a fight. If I don’t lose, I’ll think I’m the best,” she said.

She added that the experience had given her the motivation to return home and intensify her preparations.

“So that loss gave me the opportunity that, okay, I have to go back home to train harder to come back,” she explained.

Aishat also expressed concerns about the officiating at the championship, alleging that some decisions appeared to favour certain competitors. However, she maintained that the experience would not stop her from pursuing her boxing ambitions.

Beyond her individual performance, she praised the unity among Nigerian boxers, explaining that teammates continued to encourage one another even after losing their bouts.

“In boxing, we have it that even though you lost, you still have to cheer the others,” she said.

Nigeria finished the championship with three gold and two silver medals, according to the medal tally discussed during the interview.

Looking ahead, Aishat revealed that she has set herself a five-year target in boxing, believing that consistent training and prayer will help her achieve her ambitions.

She is also working towards gaining university admission while maintaining her commitment to the sport.

For Aishat, the Nairobi experience has provided another lesson in competition: losing a fight does not mean losing the determination to succeed.
