The Washington Spirit have sent a resounding message to the rest of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL): the foundation of their future midfield is completely locked down.
The club announced that Nigerian international midfielder Deborah Abiodun extended her contract through 2028 with a mutual option for 2029. Despite recovering from September 2026 hip surgery, this long-term deal highlights the Spirit's strong faith in her potential. Abiodun expressed her excitement to remain in DC and continue her development.
From Collegiate Standout to Fan Favorite
After shining with the Pittsburgh Panthers and Rivers Angels, Abiodun joined the Spirit ahead of the 2025 season. Recalled from a loan spell in August 2025, she became a driving force in the team's run to the NWSL Championship, making 21 appearances and scoring her first goal in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup against Vancouver Rise.
International Pedigree and the Road Ahead
A key player for Nigeria's Super Falcons, Abiodun has featured in the 2023 Women's World Cup, the 2024 Olympics, and WAFCON. Sporting Director James Hocken praised her unique energy and composure. As she finishes her rehabilitation, her renewal guarantees she will remain a formidable presence in the NWSL for years to come.
