The young Malagasy side, popularly known as the Makis Ladies, produced a spirited performance to overcome the physically imposing Americans, announcing their arrival on the Olympic stage with one of the competition's biggest surprises.

Playing at the Iba Mar Diop Stadium in Dakar, Senegal, Madagascar demonstrated impressive determination, defensive discipline and attacking quality to edge past their more fancied opponents in a closely contested encounter.

Both teams managed two tries each, but the difference came through the conversion kicks, with Madagascar successfully converting one of their tries while the United States failed to add the extra points.

Soa Landy opened Madagascar's scoring with a try before Sariaka Raveloarisoa added another crucial touchdown and successfully converted it to give her side the decisive advantage.

The Americans fought hard throughout the contest and managed to keep the result in doubt until the final moments. However, Madagascar held their nerve and produced a determined defensive display to protect their narrow lead.

The 12-10 triumph was particularly significant as it marked Madagascar's first-ever victory in a team sport at the Youth Olympic Games, making the achievement an important milestone for the country's sporting history.

Under head coach Dina Razafindratsara, the young Malagasy players have shown that determination and teamwork can overcome differences in resources and experience.

Their preparation included an international training camp in Tunisia, helping the squad build the confidence and competitive experience required for the tournament.

Madagascar's impressive start did not end with the victory over the United States. The Makis Ladies returned to action later in the day and defeated Spain 19-12, recording two victories from their opening two Pool B matches.

The results guaranteed Madagascar a place in the women's rugby sevens semi-finals, with their final group encounter against the Czech Republic scheduled for Tuesday, November 3.

The Czech Republic also recorded victories over Spain and the United States, setting up an important contest to determine the final Pool B standings.

For Madagascar, the victory over the United States represents more than just two points on the scoreboard. It is a statement of progress for women's rugby in the country and an inspiring achievement for a young generation determined to compete against the world's best.

With a semi-final place secured, the Makis Ladies will now turn their attention towards the medal rounds as they continue their remarkable journey at Dakar 2026.
